Home Inspectors BlogRain Catcher?Submitted by IanIquette on Sat, 04/24/2010 - 10:12. Sometimes things aren't as they appear. Take a recent window on a home that I inspected recently, for instance. From the ground nothing really seemed out of the ordinary. It looked like the fascia was a little dinged up maybe, but that's about it. As a home inspector though, you have to be inquisitive. So, while I was on the roof, and doing my normal inspection routine, I discovered that this particular window was in trouble.
The fascia wrap above this particular window had peeled away, and was now acting as a funnel for rain water. The water was being directed straight to the fascia board, and was causing some significant damage to the home in this area. Luckily, the damage, at this point, was not severe, or structural, in nature. However, if this goes much longer without being repaired, the damage could be very significant to the home.
This is just one example showing why it is so important to hire a professional home inspector when you are buying a new home. As a professional home inspector, I get paid to find things that most people would just walk right by. I will also access many areas of the home that you may not be able to, such as the attic, or a crawlspace underneath the home. It is very important to have these areas evaluated by a home inspector prior to making a purchase decision on any home. Hiring a home inspector now can save you thousands of dollars down the road, by uncovering potential problems now, and getting them repaired as soon as possible.
