Decks and Child Safety

Your home inspector has pointed out the fact that the railings are improperly spaced on the deck of your new home. What? OK, see it from a home inspectors' point of view. A home inspector is looking at your home from a safety first point of view, so when the balusters are spaced too far apart, your child can become seriously injured.

Children can easily become stuck in some of the darndest places. Railings and balusters are no different. If the spacing is greater than 4" between balusters, chances are your child could get their head stuck in between them. Ensure that the spacing is less than 4" to reduce the risk of injury to your child. And please, if you are MR or Mrs Seller, please do not yell at me for reporting this item to my client. It is a simple fix, and is a safety issue, to protect young children.

Check out the diagrams below for proper spacing of balusters and hand rails on stairways and decks.
