This is a fundraiser for the Fountain Hills School music department sponsored by the Board Boosters. The Falcons High School Jazz Band and former alumni students will perform. Tickets are per person and per couple. The Sunridge Canyon Golf Club is located at 13100 N Sunridge Drive.

The second event takes place on Sunday in honor of the 15th anniversary of Jazz in the Hills. The Octagon Cafe is hosting this event starting at 4 in the afternoon and going till 7 pm. Jazz in the Hills was started some 15 years ago by Chuck Marohnic, at the time head of Jazz Studies at ASU, and by Rev. Ed Grant, now deceased and former Pastor of the United Methodist Church in Fountain Hills. Back then it was called “Inspirations Coffee House.” 15 years of popularity it is still going on as Jazz in the Hills.

Joe Garcia & Friends will open the evening. Percussionist Garcia will be accompanied by Armand Boatman on keyboard, Tom Williams on bass and Dom Moio.  Margo Reed, a jazz vocalist icon takes the stage for a great second set. The event is open to the public at no charge. Donations and gratuities are most appreciated by the musicians. The Octagon Cafe is located at 12645 N Saguaro Blvd in the Plaza Fountainside.

Call your state radon office for help in identifying qualified mitigation contractors.

4. MYTH: Radon affects only certain kinds of homes.

FACT: House construction can affect radon levels. However, radon can be a problem in homes of all types: old homes, new homes, drafty homes, insulated homes, homes with basements, and homes without basements. Local geology, construction materials, and how the home was built are among the factors that can affect radon levels in homes.

5. MYTH: Radon is only a problem in certain parts of the country.

8. MYTH: It’s difficult to sell homes where radon problems have been discovered.

FACT: Where radon problems have been fixed, home sales have not been blocked or frustrated. The added protection is some times a good selling point.

9. MYTH: I’ve lived in my home for so long, it doesn’t make sense to take action now.

FACT: You will reduce your risk of lung cancer when you reduce radon levels, even if you’ve lived with a radon problem for a long time.

10. MYTH: Short-term tests can’t be used for making a decision about whether to fix your home.

FACT: A short-term test, followed by a second short-term test* can be used to decide whether to fix your home. However, the closer the average of your two short-term tests is to 4 pCi/L, the less certain you can be about whether your year-round average is above or below that level. Keep in mind that radon levels below 4 pCi/L still pose some risk. Radon levels can be reduced in most homes to 2 pCi/L or below.

* If the radon test is part of a real estate transaction, the result of two short-term tests can be used in deciding whether to mitigate.

Termite Baiting Treatments

Termite baits take advantage of the termite’s natural tendencies. Termites live in close contact with one another in colonies in underground nests. Termite baits use slow working poisons. The idea is that some of the termites pick up the bait, return it to the nest and spread it round, thus eliminating all the termites in the entire nest.

Termite bait stations can be particularly effective in spring when foraging is most prevalent. Place bait traps close together in areas of high termite infestation. If you are unsure of where the nest is, the safest option is to ensure that the termite bait stations

The advantages of baits is that they can attack the whole nest even if you are not sure of its location. They are easy to use. They are also less toxic – meaning you don’t have to worry about effects on pets, other wildlife, children etc. The downside is that they are not as effective as other methods. This method will kill many termites. However, the surviving termites will simple move to a new area and start to breed and build a new nest some where else – so the problem simply springs up somewhere else.

It has been found that termites feed more readily on bait that is left above ground. This is only logical since termites naturally feed on dead wood and branches that have fallen from trees and are, therefore, above ground. The most effective bait stations, such as Advance, take advantage of this. Rather than being completely buried underground, they are partially buried with the top exposed. This attracts the termites more readily and is a much more efficient method of termite extermination.

Soil Termiticide Treatments

Termiticides can be applied to areas of soil and will prevent termites from entering into the home. They create a chemical barrier which the termites will not be able to pass. By blocking the termites off from their food source, the entire nest will be killed. These are often known as repellent termite treatments.

If you don’t have any experience with pest control, you may not be comfortable using this method. For the best results, it is well worth hiring a termite control service who will know the correct chemicals to use to suit each individual situation.

Delayed Termiticide Treatments

Where as standard soil termiticides work quickly, this method of non-repellent termite treatment works much more slowly. The advantage of this is that it can be transmitted to other members of the nest – killing many with a single dose. This method is often used in conjunction with bait stations. It is hard to find effective termiticides in stores, but you can buy Termidor termiticide online.

Physical Barriers

Termites can be prevented from reaching a particular area by creating a physical barrier (such as a close weave wire mesh) between the termites and the wood. It is even possible to buy wire meshes which contain termiticides – making them doubly effective. In order for this method to be cost effective, it has to be done at the construction stage. Once a house is built, this becomes a very expensive method of termite control.

If a termite home inspection has found that you have a termite infestation, you can use these treatments to tackle the problem. However, a qualified termite controller will be able to tackle the problem in such a way that it does not reoccur – a much better bet in the long term.
